Understanding the three scales

Celsius sets the freezing point of water at 0° and boiling at 100°, which makes it intuitive for weather and cooking. Fahrenheit, used mainly in the United States, sets those points at 32° and 212°. Kelvin is the scientific standard: it starts at absolute zero (–273.15°C) and rises with the same step size as Celsius, which is why physics equations prefer it.

Quick mental math

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit fast, double it and add 30 — you'll be within a degree or two. For scientific work, Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15. Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin — three different starting points

Unlike length or weight, temperature scales don't just differ by a multiplier — they also start counting from different zero points, which is why the formulas involve addition as well as multiplication.

Knowing where each scale's zero comes from makes the conversions much easier to remember than memorizing the formulas alone.

The formulas and where the numbers come from

Celsius to Fahrenheit is F = C x 9/5 + 32. Celsius to Kelvin is just K = C + 273.15, since Kelvin uses the same size degree as Celsius but starts at absolute zero instead of the freezing point of water. Fahrenheit to Celsius reverses the first formula: C = (F - 32) x 5/9.

A fixed point worth remembering

-40 degrees is the one temperature where Celsius and Fahrenheit agree: -40C equals exactly -40F, a handy sanity check when you're verifying a conversion by hand. Water freezes at 0C / 32F / 273.15K and boils at 100C / 212F / 373.15K at standard atmospheric pressure.

Practical caution

Kelvin has no negative values in physical practice, so if a conversion into Kelvin comes out negative, the input Celsius value was below absolute zero (-273.15C) and is physically impossible — a useful check when validating scientific data entry rather than just trusting the arithmetic blindly.

Why Fahrenheit's zero point is so odd

Daniel Fahrenheit set his zero point in 1724 around the coldest temperature he could stably reproduce in the lab, using a mixture of ice, water and ammonium chloride, and set 96 degrees near normal human body temperature (later revised to 98.6 with more accurate instruments). That's why the Fahrenheit scale has no clean relationship to water's freezing or boiling points, unlike Celsius, which was deliberately built around exactly 0 and 100 for those two events.

Where each scale is actually used

The US remains one of the few countries using Fahrenheit for everyday weather and cooking, while nearly everywhere else uses Celsius. Kelvin rarely appears outside science and engineering — thermodynamics, astronomy, and color temperature ratings on light bulbs and camera settings (a '5600K' daylight bulb, for instance) all rely on it because the scale ties directly to absolute thermal energy rather than an arbitrary reference point.

Weather forecasts and the feel of a number

Because Fahrenheit divides the range between freezing and body temperature into finer increments than Celsius does, US weather forecasts often report whole-degree Fahrenheit changes that would require decimals in Celsius to express the same precision — part of why a one-degree Fahrenheit shift feels less dramatic day to day than a one-degree Celsius shift would in a country using that scale.
