Why compress images?

Getting smaller files without wrecking the picture
Every JPEG re-encode throws away some information, and the trick is deciding how much you can afford to lose before the photo starts to look mushy. This tool re-compresses your image entirely on your device, so nothing gets uploaded anywhere before you've seen the result.
Compression isn't a single dial — format, resolution, and quality setting all interact, and understanding how each one behaves saves you from either bloated files or visibly ruined photos.
How the quality slider actually behaves
JPEG compression works in 8x8 pixel blocks and quantizes the detail inside each block. At quality 90 you barely see a difference from the original; drop to quality 40 and you'll start noticing blocky artifacts around sharp edges like text or high-contrast borders. A 4000x3000 photo from a phone, often 6-8 MB, can usually drop to 800 KB-1.2 MB at quality 75 with no visible loss on a normal screen.
PNG is lossless by nature, so 'compressing' it mostly means better palette and filter choices rather than throwing away data, which is why PNG photos shrink far less than JPEG photos of the same subject.
What gets stripped along the way
Re-encoding also strips EXIF metadata by default: camera model, GPS coordinates, timestamp. That's often a plus for privacy if you're posting online, but it means you'll lose that data permanently, so keep an original copy if you need the shooting details later.
A caution worth remembering
Don't compress an already-compressed JPEG more than once or twice in a row. Each pass reintroduces new artifacts on top of the old ones, and after three or four rounds the cumulative loss becomes visible even at high quality settings — always compress from the original file when possible.
When to compress versus when to resize
Lowering quality helps with photographic noise and gradients, but if an image is simply larger than it needs to be — say a 5000px-wide banner destined for a 1200px-wide web slot — resizing the dimensions first will usually shrink the file far more than nudging the quality slider ever could, and it will look sharper at the target size too. A good rule of thumb: resize to the pixel dimensions you'll actually display, then compress from there.
