How Roman numerals work
Roman numerals use seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Larger values come before smaller ones and add up (VII = 7). When a smaller value comes before a larger one, it's subtracted (IV = 4, IX = 9). The system doesn't have a zero and traditionally caps at 3,999 without special notation.
Where you still see them
Roman numerals show up on clocks, in chapter numbers, movie release years, monarch names (Elizabeth II), Super Bowl editions, and — very often — tattoos. Getting them right matters: a lot of tattoos out there have miscounted a birth year because someone forgot the subtractive rule.

Reading and building numbers the way ancient Rome did
Roman numerals use just seven letters — I, V, X, L, C, D, M — combined additively and, in later usage, subtractively, and this tool follows the standard modern convention that most textbooks and clocks use today.
The system looks arbitrary at first glance, but it follows a small, strict set of rules once you know what to look for, and those rules are exactly what catches people out when they try to build numerals by hand.
The subtractive rule
Instead of writing IIII for 4, the standard modern form places a smaller numeral before a larger one to mean subtraction: IV means 5 - 1 = 4, IX means 10 - 1 = 9, XL means 50 - 10 = 40, and CM means 1000 - 100 = 900. Only one smaller numeral may precede a larger one this way, and only specific pairings are allowed (I before V or X, X before L or C, C before D or M) — you'll never legitimately see IL for 49, for instance.
The 3999 ceiling
Standard Roman numerals top out at 3999, written MMMCMXCIX, because there's no standalone symbol for 5000 in common use and stacking four M's (MMMM) is generally disallowed under the subtractive convention. Larger numbers historically used a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1000, but that notation isn't part of everyday usage and isn't supported here.
Worked example
2,494 breaks down as 2000 (MM) + 400 (CD) + 90 (XC) + 4 (IV), giving MMCDXCIV — notice three separate subtractive pairs stacked together, which is exactly the kind of number that's easy to get wrong by hand but trivial for the converter to check.
Why some clock faces still use IIII instead of IV
Many traditional clock faces render 4 o'clock as IIII rather than the 'correct' IV, a convention that predates the standardized subtractive rule and persisted partly for visual symmetry — IIII balances the four-letter VIII on the opposite side of the dial, and legend attributes the choice to a French king who reportedly preferred it. Either way, it's a reminder that Roman numeral usage was never perfectly standardized until modern reference works fixed it.
Where Roman numerals still appear today
Beyond clock faces, they show up in movie copyright years, Super Bowl numbering (Super Bowl LVIII, for instance), monarch and pope regnal numbers, book chapter headings, and outline numbering in formal documents — contexts where the numeral's decorative, traditional feel matters more than quick readability.
Why there's no symbol for zero
Roman numerals have no representation for zero at all, reflecting the fact that the concept of zero as a number in its own right wasn't part of Roman mathematics — it entered European arithmetic centuries later via Indian and Arabic scholarship. This absence is also why Roman numeral systems are clumsy for arithmetic (try multiplying MCLIV by XLII directly) and were used mainly for labeling and counting rather than calculation, with actual computation done on an abacus instead.
